Adding character.

Following a failed attempt to move home, we decided to listen to the universe and stay where we are.

One of the things Stanley had loved about the house we were moving to was the fireplace.

Christmas is a really special time for Stanley so I began to consider how we could create our own interpretation in the open plan living space. The obvious location was where the shelves were.

Our friend Steven of Studio Drake kindly gave us some creative input and recommended a builder.

In early December 2021 we removed the shelves. Then the wooden frame was built, with electric fire inserted, plasterboard fitted and plaster applied.

With the proximity to Christmas we left the plaster bare and the builder had recommended that I do a part water / part paint first application. They created a lot of mess! And the resulting white chimney looked seamless.

My vision was that the column would stand out and having used Bauwerk paint for a Sop project I looked at a range of colour samples and settled on Quiet. I felt it would have the feel of a warm concrete and ensure the room kept that clean, utilitarian feel, as it was a former factory. But the yellow rather than grey hue would subtly add some warmth.

I used a brush to apply two coats of Bauwerk Lime Wash Paint (but you could also use a roller). I then added the Bauwerk Quiet with their brush picking an area and gently moving the paint outwards until the brush was dry. It’s important to keep the paint stirred to ensure an even application.

It was a really enjoyable and creative process and I couldn’t be more pleased with the end result. I particularly enjoy watching the sun move around the apartment and how the colour changes during the day and especially during golden hour.

Colour Quiet, kindly supplied by Bauwerk.
