It’s been a little over a month since we officially launched Nor–Folk and, whilst we’ve briefly introduced ourselves to you and welcomed you in to our home, we thought it might be nice to follow up with a little more about us and our background – shedding more light on our ‘graphic design led approach’. Bobby explains more…
Nor–Folk is a graphic design led lifestyle brand which designs and creates apparel for kids and adults as well as items for the home. In addition to the collections and lines we produce ourselves, we also curate a range of products by fellow designers, which we admire and, in most cases, enjoy in our own home.
Nor–Folk is very much a work-in-progress and, by our own admission, is an organic evolution of our already existing family lifestyle.
So where does the ‘graphic design led’ approach come from?
Fiona and I co-run a design consultancy, which specialises in brand identity and graphic design. The Click Design Consultants celebrated its tenth birthday recently and, over the years, we’ve always liked the idea of creating a brand for ourselves – after all, we’ve created dozens and dozens of brands for our clients, so we thought ‘why not create one for ourselves?’
In so many ways, our son, Stanley, inspired us to found Nor–Folk. When falling pregnant, Fiona stepped back from day-to-day management at The Click and, after Stanley was born, she was very much a full-time Mum – especially as Stanley didn’t sleep more than two hours in a row for 11 months!
It’s clichéd to say, but starting a family really does challenge you to think differently about life. Before Stanley arrived, Fiona and I used to work long hours, often at weekends, and were very focussed on our work. As well as our ‘work hard’ ethic, we ‘played hard’ too of course, but it’s fair to say, our lives were somewhat in cruise-control. However, a baby turns your life upside down and forces you to make adjustments to your lifestyle. I reduced my working week to four days soon after Stanley arrived and now hardly ever work beyond 5.30pm.
Time to think
During the first year of Stanley’s life, mainly due to the aforementioned sleeping arrangements(!), we didn’t have an awful lot of time to think about much else than the day ahead of us – let alone the idea of creating a new business, shop, blog or brand. As time passed, and Stanley learnt the art of sleeping, Fiona and I suddenly had a lot more energy and our creative juices started to flow freely again!
All about us
Nor–Folk is all about us three – certainly not in a vein egotistical way – quite the opposite: it’s engineered around our lifestyle – the things we love, the places we enjoy and, generally, the stuff that inspires us. Graphic design is a big part of our life – we’re both graduates of Norwich Art School, now known as NUA. Our respective (graphic design) jobs brought us together in the first place – that’s how we met. An amazing friendship, ‘that weekend’ in Barcelona, our wedding vows and a baby boy later, this mutual passion for great design, creativity and ideas still runs deep. Although, I think it’s fair to say that both Fiona and I agree that our best co-creation to date wasn’t anything to do with graphic design – it’s quite clearly Stanley! Together, Fiona, Stanley and I are the Nor–Folk.
Over the coming month, the Nor–Folk will be unveiling several new product lines, including the ‘Type Faces’ collection. On top of all this, we will continue to serve up regular posts from our amazingly talented friends and fellow Nor–Folk. Thank you to each and every one of you who have shared our journey thus far and, in turn, supported us.
