At the start of December of last year, Petra Gardefjord of Mini Mocks launched a competition to win the chance to design your very own custom made moccasins.
In order to qualify, entrants had to put together a winter outfit for their child. My entry took reference to the slopes and was titled ‘minimal-ski-chic’.
When I discovered we’d won I was overjoyed. Petra said that she ‘didn’t pick winners because of what you might design after, but because you guys had cool outfits inspos. So I was a little surprised and blown away when I saw your mood board for the design. A little scared even. But I had to see it as a challenge, that’s what my job is all about, that’s why I’m doing this.’
I presented two concepts. The first was a Japanese inspired slipper but this proved to be a bit of a challenge. The biggest difficulty was finding the white felt as Petra only uses organic materials and, unfortunately, after much searching, she couldn’t source what we needed. We changed course and she developed the second concept, pictured below…
I still refer to these moccasins as slippers but they are great for spring/summer and take reference from the box-fresh white trainers that are so fashionable at the moment.
I am really pleased and incredibly grateful for the moccasins Petra made. I know she spent a good many hours working on what appears to be such a simple and minimal design. I know myself, often the most simple and geometric designs are the most time-consuming, as there really is no margin for error.
Petra said, they’re going to look ‘cool with your new clothing line’ and I do agree – I think they’ll work well together – I did have that in mind when I came up with the concept. However, what Petra has made is better than I could have imagined – thanks again Petra!
